Can You Use Any Type of Tape on a Package?

Unfortunately, you can but you run the risk of having your package open up during shipping as well as the contents spilling out. We recommend using a good carton-sealing tape, either poly or water activated to ensure the safe delivery of your package.

Watch the video above to see how different types of tapes fare on a corrugated box.

Think of a box as a house, and the packing tape as the front door.

The front door serves to keep the inside of the house secure and protected. If you use a weak, flimsy, or low-quality door, it is more likely to break open and allow intruders in, just like using the wrong type of packing tape on a box will result in the contents falling out or becoming damaged during transit.

On the other hand, using a strong and reliable door will provide more security and protection, just like using the right type of packing tape, such as carton sealing tape, will ensure the contents of the box stay secure and protected during transit.

When it comes to packaging and shipping, it’s important to use the right materials to ensure that your products arrive at their destination safely and securely. Many people may be tempted to use any type of tape that’s lying around, but this can be a mistake.

In this post, we’ll take a look at why using anything other than carton sealing tape is not recommended, the challenges you may face when using non-carton sealing tape, and tips for making sure your shipments arrive in one piece.

Can I Use Duct Tape, Masking Tape or Electrical Tape on My Package?

Carton sealing tape is designed specifically for sealing boxes, so it’s the best option for this purpose.

Other types of tape, such as duct tape, masking tape, aisle marking tape, and electrical tape, may be tempting to use, but they can cause problems. These tapes aren’t formulated for corrugated boxes, and they may not provide enough adhesive or durability to keep your packages closed and secure.

Challenges When Using Non-Carton Sealing Tape

When you use non-carton sealing tape to seal your packages, you risk having your boxes pop open or items falling out along the way. For example, masking tape is made of paper and is easy to tear, which makes it a poor choice for sealing boxes. Duct tape is much stronger, but it’s still not the ideal choice for sealing packages. Duct tape is also more expensive per roll than carton sealing tape, so you may end up spending more money if you use it.

Aisle marking tape and electrical tape are both stretchy, which makes them less likely to rip. However, they both have weak adhesives that aren’t made for corrugated boxes. Your packages are likely to arrive at their destination popped open or missing items.

Tips for Using the Right Tape on Your Packages

The best way to ensure that your shipments arrive at their destination safely and securely is to use a carton sealing tape. There are two main types of carton sealing tape: poly tape and water-activated tape.

Poly tape is a good choice if you’re looking for a quick and easy solution. It’s easy to apply and provides a strong hold.

Water-activated tape, on the other hand, requires a little more effort to use, but it provides an even stronger hold. This type of tape is activated by water, and it bonds to the surface of the box, making it more difficult to remove.

To sum up, when it comes to sealing your packages, it’s important to use the right type of tape.

Carton sealing tape is the best option because it’s designed specifically for sealing boxes. Using non-carton sealing tape, such as duct tape, masking tape, aisle marking tape, or electrical tape, can result in boxes popping open or items falling out along the way.

If you want to make sure your shipments arrive at their destination safely and securely, use a carton sealing tape, such as poly or water-activated tape.

Hey everyone, Ricky Chu from Chu’s Packaging Supplies here. Today, I’m going to talk about something we see way too often is somebody using any non-carton sealing tape to try to seal a box. I’ll show you how you start with non-carton sealing tape works with the box when you’re trying to seal it and help you decide on which one you should use and which one you shouldn’t use.

Generally, we would stay away from using anything that’s not a carton sealing tape, but sometimes you only have things laying around and you’ve got to ship something quick. So four different rolls of tape here of a duct tape masking tape, aisle marking tape and an electrical tape. None of these have the intended use of sealing boxes, but we’ve seen people use it.

So I’ll show you what happens when you do I’ll start with the masking tape. And most everybody has a roll of masking tape somewhere in their house or their garage. So masking tape is cool because it’s easy to tear. made out of paper , you seal the box with it.

Not too bad. Right? But does it have a good adhesive on it? Tears easily. Someone could break in your box fairly, fairly easily. If they wanted to masking tape is very easy to tear. Second, I have a duct tape. So duct tape is much stronger. It’s also easy to tear, but on that adhesive side, it’s much, much stronger.

So even though it’s not recommended, I’ve seen a lot of people use duct tape on boxes.

It’s not the most ideal, but it gets the job done. Another thing to keep in mind is duct tape per roll, costs way more than a carton sealing tape. So if you’re trying to save money by doing this. You’re actually spending more money. This is an aisle marking vinyl tape. So not as easy to tear as the first two, it’s actually pretty stretchy.

So it doesn’t rip as easily. Very durable. The problem is that the adhesive is not formulated for this. Isn’t made for corrugated. It’s made for concrete and flooring to mark off areas for safety reasons. So have you tried to use this on a box?

Doesn’t stick at all. I would definitely not recommend it for the aisle marking tape electrical tape. Usually it’s black, but we have yellow. We have white, we have green, all the different colors, very similar to the formula of the vinyl tape stretches a lot. Doesn’t rip as easily. Like the mask and a duct tapes, but

the adhesive, isn’t that strong either . So your packages will arrive to their destination, popped open or missing because they fell out somewhere along the way. Your best bet to make sure your shipments get to the destination secure and safe. Is to use a nice carton sealing tape either poly or water activated.
