What is the Best Tape to Use For Cold Temperatures?

If you’re packing shipments for seafood, produce, ice cream, meat production plants, but also live in a really cold area where the temperature drops really low in your warehouse, you should use cold temperature tape.

We’ve recently heard about this from some of our customers in Southern California. You don’t expect to run into issues with the cold but in your warehouse, low temperatures can affect your tape.

Think of cold temperature tape as a warm jacket for your packages. Just as you would wear a warm jacket to protect yourself from the cold, cold temperature tape protects your packages from the adverse effects of low temperatures.

Just as a warm jacket keeps you warm and comfortable, cold temperature tape keeps your packages secure and protected, ensuring that they arrive at their destination in good condition.

Cold temperatures can pose a challenge for packaging and shipping goods, particularly for perishable items like seafood, produce, ice cream, and meat.

In these scenarios, it’s important to use a tape that can withstand low temperatures and still provide a strong, secure seal. In this blog post, we’ll explore what makes cold temperature tape different from other tapes, the challenges of using tape in cold temperatures, and tips for overcoming these challenges.

The Challenge of Dealing With Cold Climates Especially in your Warehouse

One of the key challenges of using tape in cold temperatures is that standard hot melt tape may not stick properly.

This is because the hot melt adhesive can harden when exposed to low temperatures, reducing its effectiveness. As we demonstrated in the video above, standard hot melt tape can’t hold a box closed when kept in the freezer overnight.

This is a serious concern for those shipping food, as it could result in contamination or tampering.

Regular acrylic tape fares better in cold temperatures but still may not provide the same level of adhesion as cold temperature tape.

Cold Temperature Tape Advantages

Cold temperature tape, on the other hand, has a strong bite on corrugated materials even after being kept in the freezer overnight. This makes it an ideal choice for packaging and shipping goods in cold temperatures.

So, what makes cold temperature tape different from other tapes? Cold temperature tape is specifically designed to adhere in low temperatures, making it ideal for use in refrigerated or frozen environments. It’s formulated with an adhesive that remains flexible even in the coldest conditions, ensuring a strong and secure seal. Additionally, cold temperature tape is often made from materials that are resistant to moisture, helping to prevent any damage from condensation or other moisture-related issues.

Take Care of Your Tape

If you’re working with cold temperatures, here are some tips for overcoming the challenges and getting the most out of your tape:

  1. Store tapes properly. Cold temperature tapes should be stored in a cool, dry place to ensure they remain effective when needed. Avoid storing tapes near sources of heat or in direct sunlight, as this can damage the adhesive and reduce its ability to stick.
  2. Choose the right tape for the job. Cold temperature tapes are specifically designed for use in cold temperatures, so be sure to use this type of tape if you’re working in a refrigerated or frozen environment.
  3. Apply the tape properly. When using tape in cold temperatures, it’s important to apply it correctly to ensure a strong, secure seal. This means applying even pressure when applying the tape, and ensuring that the tape is centered over the seam.
  4. Use the right equipment. If you’re applying tape in a refrigerated or frozen environment, it’s important to use equipment that is designed for use in these conditions. This may include gloves or tape dispensers that are specifically designed to work in low temperatures.

In conclusion, when shipping or packaging goods in cold temperatures, it’s important to use a tape that can withstand the conditions and still provide a strong, secure seal.

Cold temperature tape is specifically designed for use in low temperatures and can provide a reliable, long-lasting seal even in the coldest environments.

By following the tips outlined above, you can ensure that your tape provides the performance you need, even in the most challenging conditions.

Hi everyone, Ricky Chu from Chu’s Packaging Supplies here. I wanted to touch back on cold temperature tape. So when do you need cold temperature tape? Definitely for seafood, produce, ice cream, meat production plants, but also you live in a really cold area where the temperature drops really low in your warehouse.

That’s where normal hot melt won’t work. So we put together this demonstration to show you the difference between the adhesives. Right here, I have three rolls of different tape that I have kept in the freezer overnight. So this is our cold temperature, standard hot melt and an acrylic. We’ll start with the standard hot melt. Standard hot melt on corrugated. Tape

it here. Doesn’t stick at all because it’s been in the freezer too long and the hot melt adhesive has hardened up. Next we’ll try a regular acrylic.

Regular acrylic sticks pretty well.

And here we have our cold temperature hot melt.

Also has a really good bite on the corrugated. Another quick demo here is we taped this overnight – this box using our standard hot melt tape, and it’s not even holding, it’s popping open. This is the last thing you want when you’re shipping, especially when it comes to food. You don’t want any contamination, you don’t want any tampering with it, but if you’re using a standard hot melt in the freezer, it’s not gonna stick.

That’s just the way it goes. We print on all three adhesives for the tape. So whatever you need, we’re gonna have it. If you have more questions or you need more information about custom printed tape or different adhesives, please visit our website at www.chuspkg.com.
